“Granizados” or delicious “slushies” flavored with syrup, sweet potato, sweet cherry, tamarindo or condensed milk are quite popular in Guatemala. Ana, a 38 year old married mother of 2 children (5,23), has a convenience store and makes these icy treats. Besides selling basic items in the store, she also sells prepared foods and “choco fruta” or chocolate covered fruit! Her children attend school. The younger child is in kindergarten while the older one studies at the university. Ana is requesting her 4th KIVA loan to buy an ice crusher for her delicious “granizados”. She will be able to increase production and efficiently attend to her customers.
Nine ladies, including Ana, belong to the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Perlas Preciosas de Dios” in the department/state of Quetzaltenango. They work hard at their food businesses, convenience stores, selling fish and “granizados”. Other women have beauty salons. Because the women have little or no formal education, they benefit greatly from their monthly educational training sessions, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care. Topics are drawn from 4 areas: business, health, family, women. Every other month, they have access to basic health care services delivered by a visiting nurse. She offers all kinds of services and exams for the women. This useful combination of loans, education and health care is called “Microcredit Plus”.
Thank you, KIVA investors, for funding these much appreciated loans!
